Currently, the 12th season of IPL is going on and we are all rooting for our favourite franchise. IPL has become one of the most money-making domestic leagues. With numerous sponsors and the franchises partnering with some of the biggest brands, our favourite players and the team owners make millions every year. Every year at the auctions we see some of the best players being signed up for crores. In 2019’s auction the ten most expensive players were:
Jaydev Unadkat who was bought by RR for Rs 8.4 crore,
Varun Chakravarthy who was bought by KXIP for Rs 8.4 crore
Sam Curran who was bought by KXIP for Rs 7.20 crore
Colin Ingram who was bought by DC for Rs 6.40 crore
Shivam Dube was purchased by RCB for Rs 5 crore
Mohit Sharma who was bought by CSK for Rs 5 crore
Axar Patel who was bought by DC for Rs 5 crore
Carlos Brathwaite who was bought by KKR for Rs 5 crore
Mohammed Shami who was bought by KXIP for Rs 4.80 crore
Prabhsimran Singh who was bought by KXIP for Rs 4.80 crore
These were the most expensive players of this year. And now we are going to list the top ten most expensive players in the history of IPL:
1. VIRAT KOHLI
In 2018, Royal Challengers Bangalore bought Kohli for ₹17 crores. Of course, RCB wouldn’t let Kohli go who is considered to be one of the best batsmen of all time. Kohli has been a pillar for RCB from the very first season. The captain of RCB has been one of the consistent players of the team. Though they have not tasted the victory yet, Kohli has proven his capabilities. He has become the highest run scorer of IPL.
2. YUVRAJ SINGH
Yuvraj held the record of being the most expensive player of IPL, twice, until he was surpassed by Kohli. In 2014, Yuvraj was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a record INR 14 crores. It made the record of being the most expensive buy of IPL. A year later Delhi Daredevils spent a whopping ₹16 crores to sign him for their team. And it made Yuvraj Singh the most expensive player in IPL.
3. ROHIT SHARMA
In 2018, Rohit Sharma was retained by the Mumbai Indians franchise. They spent a huge amount of ₹15 crores on their current captain. Sharma has been a part of Mumbai Indians since 2011 and he has been one of the most consistent players of the team. He led MI to IPL victory in 2013. He also led the team to win the Champions League T20 title that year. He was the key contributor to the team when they lift the IPL trophy again in 2015. He was named the player of the match in that finale.
4. MS DHONI
MS has been ranked as one of the most valuable players of IPL. In 2018, Chennai Super Kings retained Dhoni for a handsome amount of INR 15 crore. Dhoni has been leading CSK from the inaugural season of IPL. The Captain Cool has led CSK to their glorious IPL victory three times. Dhoni has also become one of the highest run scorers of IPL. And the way he is leading the team this year, CSK might just become the first team to lift the trophy four times.
5. RISHABH PANT
IPL has become the best stage for newcomer cricketers to showcase their talent. Rishabh Pant was one of them. This wicket keeper-batsmen made an instant impact on the league in his very first season. In 2018, he became the fifth most expensive buys of IPL. He was signed by Delhi Daredevils for a whopping INR 15 crores. He did give a great performance that year and went on to become the wicketkeeper in the Test team of India.
6. BEN STOKES
Ben Stokes has established his name as one of the best all-rounders. In his very first season in 2017, Stoke made the record of being one of the costliest buys of IPL. He was signed by Rising Pune Supergiant for a staggering amount of INR 14.5 crores. He did give a smashing performance that year. Stokes currently represents the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League.
7. DINESH KARTIK
Currently, Karthik is the captain and one of the most valuable players of the Kolkata Knight Riders team in the IPL. The wicketkeeper-batsman has proven to be the match-winner at times. He led KKR to the playoffs in 2018. In 2014, Karthik was signed by Delhi Daredevils for INR 12.5 crores. And this made him the 7th most expensive player of IPL. In his IPL career, Karthik scored an overall of 3494 runs in 175 matches.
8. DAVID WARNER
After his ban, Warner has come back to join the Sunrisers Hyderabad this year. In 2018, Warner was signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad team for INR 12.5 crores. Warner is considered as one of the best batsmen ever. In 2016, Warner led Hyderabad to their first IPL victory. Warner is also one of the highest run scorers of IPL. He played in 120 matches and scored a massive 4363 runs.
9. STEVE SMITH
After the ball tampering antics, Steve Smith was also banned for a year and has recently joined the team Rajasthan Royals. Smith is unarguably one of the most skilled batsmen of this century. In 2018, he was signed by the Rajasthan team for INR 12.5 crores. He was a key player for his team. Smith will be fighting to earn his spot in the IPL team as well as the national Australian team this year.
10. MANISH PANDEY
Manish Pandey came into the limelight after playing a brilliant inning in IPL 2009. He represented Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Deccan Chargers and smashed an unbeaten 114. He was the first Indian batsman to score a ton in the IPL. In 2014, he was purchased by Kolkata Knight Riders and became one of the key members of the team. In 2018 IPL auction he was signed up by Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 11 crores. Which made him one of the most expensive players of IPL.
