So, if you’re feeling confused about whether to watch it or not, here is our take on one of the most anticipated movies of 2019- “Joker”. Joker is directed by The Hangover director Todd Phillips and the movie has already won the Golden Lion award at the Cannes.
Let me start with Joaquin Phoenix, who basically owned the movie. Joker has been played multiple times on-screen by different actors. And the most memorable acts were by Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger (and Jared Leto but not in a good way). The origin movie of Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, who as a talk show host was brilliant to watch and Zazie Beetz. The story shows a humane transition of Arthur Fleck becoming the Joker. The failed comedian humiliated by the society again and again finally falls over the edge. The social humiliation, isolation and abuse take a toll on Arthur’s already not-so-great mental health.
The movie is not filled with action sequences like most superhero movies but it does have some moments that are disturbing (you can tell by all the controversies that are happening).
The dramatic life of Arthur is based on the 1970s Gotham city. Where high unemployment rates have created an extreme scenario of social and civil unrest. Arthur becomes a symbol of change in the city.
The human experiences and upbringing create a believable character arc which is quite uncommon in superhero movies. The slow burn will make you root for Arthur but the movie won’t glorify the deeds he does as Joker. You will pray that Arthur gets the help he needs but you would not want to root for the chaotic, attention freak man that Arthur has become.
Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is raw, more grounded, more human, dark, devastating yet mesmerizing. Joaquin Phoenix was the perfect choice for the role, the man simply blows you away. The visuals, as well as the score, are also memorable. The Inspirations from Taxi Driver and King of Comedy can be clearly seen. And of course, Robert De Niro is brilliantly even in the small role. There were no dull moments in the movie. It never seems like Joaquin Phoenix is trying too hard. It never feels like his nervous laughs and all those reactions came out of nowhere. Everything leads up and makes sense. If you think Jared Leto ruined Joker for you, you really need to watch this movie. At last, you would just like to mention:
” The worst thing about mental illness that people expect you to behave as if you don’t” Arthur/Joker, 2019.
We definitely recommend you to watch this great movie.
