Gully Boy is named India’s Oscars entry & Canada is entering with Antigone

For the 92nd Academy Awards, India has put forward the movie Gully Boy directed by Zoya Akhtar, starring- Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. The Best Foreign Language Film category has been renamed as the Best International Feature Film and has its deadline set on 1 October 2019 for submission. 

   Gully Boy which follows the journey of an aspiring rapper from the Dharavi slums of Mumbai, fighting against the odds, was chosen by the Film Federation of India (FFI) lead by Aparna Sen. 

    Gully Boy had 28 films as its contender this year. There were nine Hindi movies including Gully Boy. There were four Marathi entries and three each in Malayalam, Tamil and Bengali. Two Gujrati movies and one each in Assamese, Kannada, Telugu and Nepali were also contenders.

     On Sep 1, Farhan Akhtar Who is the producer of the film along with Ritesh Sidhwani, twitted “Gully Boy has been selected as India’s official entry to the 92nd Oscar Awards. #apnatimeaayega. Thank you to the film federation and congratulations #Zoya @kagtireema @ritesh_sid @RanveerOfficial @aliaa08 @SiddhantChturvD @kalkikanmani & cast, crew and hip hop crew,”

Other than India, Canada submitted the movie Antigone by Quebec writer-director Sophie Deraspe.

Antigone is a modern re-visioning of Sophocles’ Greek tragedy. Set in Montreal, the movies centres on Antigone, played by newcomer Nahema Ricci. She is a teenager who is caught in a clash between her moral code and Canada’s justice system when tragedy strikes her immigrant family.

 France submitted the movie Les Misérables while Algeria was the first country to officially submit this year with their movie Papicha. 

   From the long list, ten finalists will be shortlisted. The final five Oscar nominees will be announced on January 13, 2020. 

   Meanwhile, Sweden made a record by choosing the movie And Then We Danced. It is the first time ever Sweden has chosen a film in a full foreign language (Georgian) instead of Swedish. It is also the first submission featuring LGTBQ theme at its centre. 

   The 92nd Academy Awards will be celebrated on February 9, 2020.
