Sci-fi movies are one of the best genres, but they are also harder to make. The movie needs to be logical and also extraordinary. Movies like Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Primer didn’t get much from the critics but most people love these movies. Before jumping in the list here are the honourable mentions: About Time (I) (2013), The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009), It’s a Wonderful Life, Source Code, Timecrimes, Safety Not Guaranteed (2012), Army of Darkness, The Time Machine (1960), Planet of the Apes. 1. Back to the Future (1985) & Back to the Future Part II (1989):


Back to the Future and its sequel Back to the Future Part II are two of the classic movies. The 1985’s original by filmmaker Robert Zemeckis’ follows the story of Marty who travels back in time with a mission to make his parents fall in love. And in the sequel, Marty Mcfly travels back in time and the adventures begin. Back to the Future is one of the best time travel movies ever. It’s well written and well-executed premise earned a lot of praises. And although the sequel couldn’t reach the height of the original, it certainly didn’t ruin the franchise.

2. Groundhog Day (1993):


Groundhog Day took a hilarious take on the concept of time travelling. Bill Murray shined in the movie with his excellent acting. The story of Phil who goes to the town of Punxsutawney for an assignment and realises that he is relieving the same day again and again.

3. Twelve Monkeys (1995):


Filmmaker Terry Gilliam who also made another great time travel movie Time Bandits gave us one of the best time travel movies, Twelve Monkeys. Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis both did a great job playing their part. The story follows convict James Cole who was sent on a mission where he has to travel back in time to learn about the main reason behind the outbreak of a virulent holocaust. And his journey results in a dirty and unforgettable experience.

4. Predestination (I) (2014):


Ethan Hawke played an agent travels through time with a mission to stop criminals from going through with their crimes in the movie Predestination. Ethan Hawke shined in the movie. The plot’s attention to detail, twists will grab your attention and make you think.

5. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006):


An amazing anime about a school girl named Makoto discovers a device that gives her the ability to physically leap through time. At first, she uses her abilities to her advantage then she starts to realise how her time travelling is affecting those around her.

6. The Terminator & Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991):


James Cameron’s groundbreaking 1984 sci-fi actioner The Terminator put the bar high for the other movies of the same genre. Many people tend to forget that the robotic character played by Arnold Schwarzenegger came from the future. The movie had a promising plot and great actors. The sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, was even better with buddy comedy, PTSD drama, and relationship stories into this sci-fi actioner, differentiating it from the original.

7. Interstellar (2014):


Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is not your typical time traveller movie. The captivating movie you to space and show you a place in a dystopian future where a group of astronauts travels through a wormhole in order to find a new home for humans. With a great cast and a promising plot, this movie will surely keep you in your seats.

8. Donnie Darko (2001):


Donnie Darko has become a cult classic, one of the best movies made on this sub-genre. Donnie Darko played by Jake Gyllenhaal gets informed the world will end in 28 days by a figure in a bunny costume. Donnie Darko takes time but once you wrap your head around the movie, you will surely like it.

9. Looper:


Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Looper showcased an excellent mix of passion and meticulousness. This twisty time-travel story follows the character, Joe who finds himself to be the victim of his own actions when he travels back in time. With intense action sequences and a promising plot, Looper is an entertaining movie following the sub-genre.

10. Edge of Tomorrow (2014):


Following the feet of Groundhog Day, Edge of Tomorrow also follows a character who is stuck in a loop relieving the same day again and again. But this action-packed movie starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt will keep every scene fresh even though it is the same day.
